There is so much said abuot the open source and free OS and Softwares. But very few have actually know what does open source or free software means. Here is a small intro to it.
The GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or simply GPL) is a widely used free software license, originally written by Richard Stallman for the GNU project.
To be considered as open source software by the software development industry, certain criteria must be met:
- The program must be freely distributed.
- Source code must be included.
- Anyone must be allowed to modify the source code.
- Modified versions can be redistributed.
- The license must not require the exclusion of other software or interfere with the operation of other software.
A few open source softwares are like Fedora OS, Open Office etc.
